Background:
Jack was born as the first child of Edward and Elizabeth Aubrey. His father, at the time, was a Post-Captain in the Royal Navy, and was in command of the 54-gun fourth rate ship of the line HMS Oxford. His mother, was the daughter of a General of the Royal Army. Will’s father met his future wife when he was still a young Lieutenant. He had been invited to a party and spent all evening trying to impress her. Fortunately for both him and his future sons, the man succeeded.
Later in his career, Jack's father would move up to reach the rank of Admiral. He became the first Viscount Aubrey. He currently serves as a Lord of the Admiralty.
After Jack, there were two other boys: William and Robert. The two youngest of the Aubrey’s would always do everything together. They played together, received education together, and even slept in the same room together.
When he was eight, Robert and Jack were climbing a big tree on the family grounds. Jack fell, however, and the wound on his back left him with a large scar. This did not stop the boy from climbing into trees again barely after he recovered.
Jack and his older brother received education from a kind man that their father had hired. The pair were taught mathematics and Latin, French and geography, and history and … Until he turned twelve, that is. On his twelfth birthday, Jack was to become a Midshipman aboard one of his father’s friends’ ships, the 32 gun frigate Minerva.
For five years, he worked his ass off. He was taught by the Captain, the Lieutenants and the Master alike. He learned many things, and finally when he was 17 he was given his first command. Jack became an Acting-Lieutenant, and was to sail the captured French 36 gun frigate back to Kingston with a detachment of twenty men. Though it would normally have a crew of around two hundred and fifty, the twenty he had were enough to sail it back.
On the way home, however, Jack came across a lone Spanish sloop-of-war. It carried no more than twenty guns, but it would have a much higher rate of fire and substantially more men. Jack was faced with the choice of either ignoring it, or attacking it. He chose the latter. He ordered the old Spanish flags to be raised, and pretended to be crippled. While the sloop took the bait, and turned around to come to the aid, Jack had both broadsides loaded.
Just as the sloop came to the side, Jack had the Spanish flag to be lowered, in favor of the British Jack. Then he fired the entire broadside, running from gun to gun. After the smoke cleared, the captain of the sloop surrendered. The man explained that because of sickness, there were only a couple of men left, and most of those had been killed now. Jack enlisted the help of a handful of Spanish sailors, and transferred little less than half of his men to the sloop. The two ships then sailed back to Kingston, side by side, both limited in speed due to their small crews and the damages.
After arriving in his home port, the Captain commanding the port looked at him in amazement. The man was impressed, and assured Jack that his share in the sloop’s prize money was most likely to approach half its value since he was the only officer.
Because of his outstanding performance, Jack was promoted to Lieutenant, and was posted aboard 60 gun Fourth Rate, HMS Panther as her Third Lieutenant. For some years, he served there, until he became a Master and Commander of his own ship. HM Sloop Wasp was his.
Finally, just as the war with the Americans started, Jack commanded his ship into an action with a French frigate. He took a great many losses, but prevailed, and captured it. On his return, he was promoted to the rank of Post-Captain, and was given command of HMS Intrepid, on the North American station. The Intrepid was truly a plum command for a junior post-Captain like himself, but as of yet she remains untested under his command.
