Intrepid, at sea
Private Zachariah Sutton, 14th Foot
Dear cousin,
I heard that your regiment has been sent to the North Americas! I, myself command the Intrepid, and am returning to port for refits. If you are in the vicinity in the next two months or so, you must most certainly call on me! I may even be able to do something about that nasty situation of you being a mere private when I next see you! I am terribly sorry for the shortness of this letter, as the packet has been sighted, and I wanted this to be among my dispatches.
I have the Honour to be, sir, Forever your servant, J. Aubrey, Captain, Royal Navy

Some infernal town, New York
Cousin,
If that port be in the colonies, then I will most certainly buy you a drink! Though I do not know how much time I will be having for drinks soon. They mean to march us out at once. I am pleased to be serving under General Howe. Much of what I know is from reputation but that reputation has been nothing but good. I am convinced that he is the man for the job. I have no reservations as to his skill and abilities.
I must end this as orders have come. We are marching out. And while I am knocking down a few Rebels, I do hope you intend to show their pirates - for that is all their sailors are - a few lessons. This war will be over within the month, mark my words. These farmers are angry but the best of them is no match for the worst of us.
Humble and Obedient, Z. Sutton, 14th Foot
PS. Nasty situation? I am quite happy where I am, sir. As a Post-Captain I am sure you realize the high degree of responsibility that is oftentimes attached to advancing rank. At the least, if I were to be promoted, I would have to set a good example ... and occasionally be sober.

Intrepid, New York
Dear Cousin,
The Intrepid has laid anchor in the city of New York. You will be able to find me aboard my ship, of course. Please do come by if you are nearby. Also, as a Captain, of course I know what responsibilities come with rank. I also know the attached benefits! And even if I only purchase an Ensign's, or Cornet's commission, you will still have plenty to prove yourself for promotion. Please do consider my offer, cousin, for we can't have a lowly Private in our family, can we?
I look forward to seeing you again after such a long time, cousin.
I have the Honour to be, sir, Forever your servant, J. Aubrey, Captain, Royal Navy

New York
Cousin,
You forget that I am no longer a part of this family. As I am sure you remember, my dear father ended his time upon this earth without recanting his words or putting myself back into his will. So, fortunately, there is not a lowly Private in the family. But, that being said, a greater pay would certainly be welcome. I seem to run through mine in no time at all.
They keep us fairly busy - mostly with tasks that serve no purpose or at least none that I can see - but if I am off duty soon while you are still in port, I will see about paying a visit. That is, if you do not mind a visit by a lowly private.
Respectfully, Z. Sutton, 14th Foot
