Name: Nathaniel Sutton
Age: 33
Patriot
Physical Appearance:
Standing at a little over 6 feet tall he is well known for his flaming red hair which he inherited from his belated mother Hannah. Cool blue eyes and a muscular, lanky frame complete his look as he goes about his business. He sometimes has a beard and other times he has shaved it off. Nathaniel was not born into privilege so he wears simple clothing when he is not in uniform. Nathaniel keeps his clothing as stable as possible learning skill with a needle at an early age from his mother.
Strengths:
Quick witted, a fast talker and a fast leaner, he adapts to his surroundings as best he can and uses his abilities to his advantage. Nathaniel finds talking to people fairly easy and cannot in any way be considered shy. He knows how to use most weapons of the day carrying on him always a dagger he inherited from his father that had been taken with his father from Wales on his journey to the Americas.
Weaknesses:
Nathaniel is hot tempered, and blunt to a fault his mouth has gotten him into plenty of trouble especially if alcohol is involved. Sarcastic to a fault, he is highly opinionated and sometimes his views have gotten him into trouble.
Background:
Nathaniel was born in the spring of 1742 to Ioan and Hannah Sutton, two former indentured servants originally of Cardiff, Wales, who made a home for themselves in the New Jersey colony after their indentured servitude contracts with the family they came with was fulfilled. Nathaniel grew up in Leeds Point, a section of what is now Atlantic County, New Jersey. It was a hard life for the family but the hardships made the family close, all in all Nathaniel was the eldest of six children, only he and two siblings, Anne and Elizabeth, surviving to adulthood.
Nathaniel was taught the very basics in education learning to read from his mother as well as fishing, hunting and some farming from his father as well as his father’s original trade as a chandler. Nathaniel was a natural at hunting and fishing selling furs and pelts to traders and the natives with his father. Ioan made sure the boy knew how to defend himself and how to take pride in himself. Hannah had often worried when he was younger that he might run off with the Native Americans because he had wanted to be so much like his father’s native friends. Fiercely protective of his sisters he watched over them constantly when they were children. He dealt with heartache over the years as he lost four siblings to sickness, in infancy and accidents but his younger siblings loss only made him stronger. His mother however did not take each loss well and was somewhat over protective of her children. Nathan grew up with the old folktales of his parent’s native Wales and the legends of his father’s Native American friends. He was taught to take pride in where he came from and who he was. He is a proud Welshman and nowadays dreams of being a proud American.
He was close with his sisters and in his youth he taught the girls how to trap and how to fish, things his father and mother did not approve of but were pleased that the children took an interest in doing something together that did not involve some form of squabbling as siblings often do. When he was in his late teens he joined the British army and fought eventually in the French and Indian War. He developed the nickname of the Jersey Devil during that time due to his use of guerilla fighting tactics and ferosity. His nickname is also the name of an old New Jersey urban legend that his mother had told him and his younger sisters as children. In the process of the war he lost his family’s home, natives had attacked his father’s homestead burning the homestead to ashes and killing his father, mother and two sisters as they tried to flee. He buried the bodies nearby and swore to them that their deaths would not be in vain. He fought bravely during the remainder of the war but is still bitter that his family had to pay a high price for their loyalty British Crown. Since then he has made his way in the world as a chandler, scout, trapper and trader and occasionally he had to fight the natives throughout the years.
