Name:
Hinke Gerrits (pronounced Hin-ka or Hink-ya, English translation would be Helen)
Age:
21
Patriot, Loyalist, Neutral/Undecided, Hessian, French, N. American:
Loyalist
Physical Appearance:
Despite the stereotype of all Dutch people being tall, blonde, and blue eyed, Hinke is descended from a specific group of Dutch and Spanish interbreeding in the North of the Netherlands. She is tall, about 5'10, and has mousy blonde hair, but there is where the stereotype stops. Her eyes are quite dark, and she has very thick eyebrows. Her body frame is very slight, being a lower class woman and working hard all her life, and she is very sensitive about her rather large feet
Strengths:
Hard worker, Hinke has always been taught to do her best, no matter what the task is.
extroverted and cheerful, it is rare to not see a smile on her face.
Sewing, cooking, and tutoring children are some of her favourite past times.
Language, Hinke can speak Frisian (Friesland is a province in the north of the Netherlands), Dutch, and English.
Weaknesses:
Cheap, (this could also belong under strengths!) she will never over-pay for anything, she knows the value of a good deal and can out-haggle the best of traders
Cleaning, Hinke hates laundry of any kind.
Stubborn, a trait of most Dutch folk, Hinke likes to stick to tradition and rarely wavers from what she knows.
Naive, she doesn't quite understand the war or the reasons behind it, and can't see why the colonists can't just ask their King politely for what they want.
Background: Hinke Gerrits was born in Friesland in the Netherlands, the third daughter and fifth child of seven by Gerrit and Iekje of Dokkum. Gerrit was a local brewer, and Iekje worked at the baker's shop. When Hinke turned 18 she decided she would make her own life in America and booked passage with a merchant ship, signing up for a five year indenture contract with the owner of the trade ship. She arrived in New York, signed her contract as Helen, the English equivalent of her Dutch name, and Gerrits, her father's name, since most in Friesland at that time didn't have last names. She was set up in the merchant's modest middle-class home as a maid and tutor to his two children. she is now three years into her contract and is happily settled in to her new life, she speaks English quite well, and is saving up for a bakery shop when her last two years are finished. Hinke doesn't quite understand the reasons behind the war, but because her master is a stout follower of the King, so long as the King keeps his business afloat, she is too. She believes the revolution will not last long, and all will be able to get back to normal once the rebels are defeated. The success of the English army is, after all, a tradition!
